Things to Do in Victoria, BC: A Local's Guide
Having lived in Greater Victoria for over 50 years, I've seen this city evolve from a quiet government town into one of Canada's most vibrant and livable cities. Here are my picks for the best things to do in and around Victoria.
Outdoor Activities
Victoria's mild climate means outdoor activities are possible year-round. Here are the essentials:
- Galloping Goose Trail: A 55-kilometre multi-use trail that runs from Sooke to Sidney, passing through the heart of the region. Perfect for cycling, running, and walking.
- East Sooke Regional Park: Rugged coastal trails with stunning ocean views. The Coast Trail is one of the best day hikes in the region.
- Beacon Hill Park: The crown jewel of Victoria's park system. Walk the cliff-top path to the Dallas Road waterfront for sunset views of the Olympic Mountains.
- Ocean Kayaking: Launch from any number of beaches and explore the harbour, the Chain Islets, or the rocky coastline of Sidney Island.
Dining and Food
Victoria's food scene punches well above its weight for a city of its size. The Inner Harbour, Chinatown, and downtown core are packed with restaurants ranging from casual to fine dining. The Saturday Market (May through September) at the Empress Hotel is a must-visit for local produce, artisan foods, and prepared meals.
The Cowichan Valley wine region is a short drive away, and several local vineyards on the Saanich Peninsula offer tastings and tours. Victoria also has a thriving craft brewery scene, with more than 20 breweries in the region.
Cultural Attractions
The Royal BC Museum is one of Canada's finest, with world-class exhibits on British Columbia's natural and human history. The BC Parliament Buildings offer free tours and are stunning when lit up at night. The Art Gallery of Greater Victoria in Rockland features rotating exhibitions and a permanent collection.
Weekend Getaways
Living in Victoria means easy access to incredible weekend trips. Take the ferry to Salt Spring Island for galleries and markets. Drive to Tofino for world-class surfing (3.5 hours). Head to the Gulf Islands for a relaxing retreat. And of course, Vancouver is just a ferry ride away.
