Getting Around Victoria
Victoria is one of the most walkable cities in Canada, with a growing transit network, dedicated cycling infrastructure, and easy access to the mainland via BC Ferries and air travel.
Driving and Road Network
The Trans-Canada Highway (Highway 1) runs through Greater Victoria, connecting downtown Victoria to Langford, Colwood, and the Saanich Peninsula. The Patricia Bay Highway (Highway 17) connects Victoria to the ferry terminal and the airport. Traffic is manageable compared to Vancouver or Toronto, with peak congestion during morning and afternoon commute hours.
BC Transit
BC Transit operates the bus network throughout Greater Victoria. Frequent routes connect downtown to all major communities. The system is affordable and reliable, with reduced fares for seniors and students. The Victoria Regional Transit Commission continues to expand service to meet growing demand.
Cycling and Walking
Victoria has an extensive network of bike lanes and multi-use pathways. The Galloping Goose Regional Trail spans 55 kilometres from downtown Victoria to Sooke, connecting communities and providing a safe route for cyclists and pedestrians. Many neighbourhoods are highly walkable, especially downtown Victoria, Fairfield, James Bay, and Oak Bay.
BC Ferries and Air Travel
BC Ferries connects Swartz Bay (North Saanich) to Tsawwassen (Vancouver) with a 95-minute sailing. The Victoria Clipper and Harbour Air offer passenger-only float plane service from downtown Victoria to downtown Vancouver. Victoria International Airport (YYJ) offers direct flights to major Canadian cities and select US destinations.
